How do we do it

CARE & COLLABORATION

Agapai is a dedicated organisation that takes pride in providing guidance and support to its beneficiaries. The organisation offers a diverse range of activities, including vocational training, financial literacy training, job placement assistance, health and hygiene education, and community development.
These programmes are made possible through the generosity of Agapai’s donors, who also contribute their valuable time to volunteer work. Agapai is committed to helping beneficiaries achieve self-sufficiency and live fulfilling lives.

Daily food supply, liberating the poor in villages from hunger

Agapai's Grains Programme is an initiative aimed at lifting the disadvantaged from hunger and malnutrition by providing hot and nutritious meals to over 100 individuals in need each day, six days a week. The recipients of this invaluable service include homeless individuals, many of whom are elderly and malnourished, who subsist with little means for livelihood and struggle to avoid starvation while residing on pavements.

The feedback received from the individuals who are benefiting from our services is incredibly powerful and deeply moving. One elderly woman became visibly emotional as she expressed that the food provided at our center was the only source of sustenance that kept her alive. Another person receiving aid through the generosity of our donors shared that the relief of knowing they will have access to food every day allows them to rest peacefully each night. These testimonials are a testament to the impact of our organization and serve as a reminder of the critical support we provide to those in need.

The 'Gift of Goats' initiative was born from a heartfelt conversation with like-minded friends who shared a passion for improving the lives of widows and underprivileged individuals in rural communities. Recalling a lesson attended with my father on goat-rearing as a means to support impoverished families, we discovered the potential for these sturdy animals to multiply and provide sustainable livelihoods while requiring only a minimal initial investment. Goat farming provides a reliable source of income, with high returns on investment ratio (ROI), offering economic freedom to those who engage in it. Since the inception of this initiative in early 2020, a total of 66 pairs of goats have been gifted to families in need, bringing joy and hope to widows and underprivileged communities across four villages. The gifted pairs of goats have gone on to reproduce, creating a tribe of goats within two years, with recipients giving away two goats to others in need, thus continuing the cycle of lifting individuals out of poverty.

We provide vocational training to underprivileged communities with the aim of equipping them with the skills necessary to sustain themselves and their families. An example of our efforts includes tailoring classes specifically tailored for young girls in rural areas and training programs that enable visually impaired or disabled individuals to produce and market aromatic candles as a means of generating income.

Go Green:

Mango is considered one of the three "mukkanigal" fruits of Tamil Nadu, alongside jackfruit and banana. A single mango tree can provide pesticide and fertiliser-free fruit for an entire family. Raw mangoes can be pickled in both dry and wet forms, while ripe fruit can be sold. Similarly, pomegranate and guava trees require less space and offer medicinal benefits. Naturally grown fruits bring joy to children as they partake in picking and consuming these fruits alongside playful squirrels. Our objective is to create a wide-ranging impact, beginning with the betterment of local soil and water tables, and expanding into a self-sustaining ecosystem in the neighboring villages and open lands in which we operate. In a village school, we planted numerous Indian palm trees that are resilient and bear fruit during the summer, while improving the water table.
